If the gentleman will read further he will find that. that. 5.516.000 included 1.300.000 colored persons who could nob have immigrated to this country. and there were but 3.184.000 illiterate white persons 10 years of age and over unable to read. or only 5 per cent of the population. And if the gentleman will read still further down the report he will find there were but 2.273.000 of illiterate males of 21 years of age and over. even including colored people. so there can not be so many illiterate foreigners in this country. as the gentlemans first supposition would lead one to suppose.
