New Mexico. Arizona. Utah. and Nevada we find the percentage the same40 per cent of the rural population is foreign born or of foreign parentage. and. lastly. in the States on the Pacific coastWashington. Oregon. and Californiawe find that over 42 per cent of the people who are making their homes on the farms are of foreign birth or of foreign parentage. Now. Mr. Chairman and gentlemen of this House. I ask you If this is not conclusive proof that the immigrant does go on the farm. that he does not remain in the larger cities. and that he is one of the pioneers in the "backtotheland" movement? For the edification of some of the gentlemen who are of the opinion that this influx of immigrants is harmful to our country. I wish to read some further statistics. taken from a report of the Director of the Census. which show that in the States of Ohio. Indiana.
