Session #63 · 1913–15

Speech #630134971

The gentleman from Oklahoma was half rightthe man who fears God ought to find a place to worship in freedom here. No less ought the honest and true man to find a place here to work in freedom. These gentlemen in substance say an immigrant may be a good man and true. but we avail ourselves of the excuse of illiteracy and exclude him because we are for restriction for restrictions sake. I think I understand the old doctrine and teaching of the Democratic Party when they fought knownothingism. and I believe that the time has come when knownothingism. under a little different guise. is stalking abroad today. The time may come when our overcrowded population will make us say. "We have no more help. no more space to give to the deserving poor and the oppressed of other lands." but. thank God. that time has not come yet.
