Session #63 · 1913–15

Speech #630133746

Now. Mr. Chairman. if these gentlemen. have finished with their questions I will undertake to make the few remarks that I have expected to address to the House on this question of the restriction of immigration. When the bill was before us a year ago and on other occasions prior to that I addressed the House rather fully. and it is not necessary now that I should make an elaborate speech to explain why I am in favor of a restriction of immigration. In the course of this debate much has been said about the necessity of a homogeneous people if we are to continue a free. representative. republican government in the United States. Diversity of races. training. and opinions. when that diversity of opinion is deepseated and the result of training under other political conditions. make an unfavorable environment for the maintenance of the sort of government we received from our fahers. and which some of us hope to hand unimpaired to the next generation.
