Session #63 · 1913–15

Speech #630132163

Mr. Chairman and gentlemen of the committee. the point has been made here that the enemies of this bill. in its literacy test. are hostile to the cause of labor. Now. I will yield to no man in this Chamber a higher regard for labor than I have. I will not concede. that any man is a truer friend of labor than I am. If it would help the cause of labor to keep out the victims of the unjust laws of their countries who can not read. I would be tempted. regardless of the injustice of the matter. to favor this legislation.
