Speech #630131861

I admit that the rule brought ill by the Rules Committee is al fair rule. lnld if tile bill were a(s fair as the rule I would not object to it. Iowever. 1 do object to the Rules Committee bringing in i special rule oil this bill when. in fact. there is no general demand for this legislation. The Democratic Party as well is the Reiniblican Party has gone on record on the subject of immigration legislation. and the last Democratic platform. which contained specilie reference to this question. contained the following: We condemn aild denounce any aid all attempts to restrict nimmigration of tile indistrioms ad worthy of foreign laids. Through tile veto mlessage of President Taft during the last administration the Reillican Party exlpressed its views on this subject and went ol record as olposing such iifair legislation. I do not believe that we should consider this bill now. when there is pending other important legislation which should be speedily enacted into lw.
