Speech #630118340

If we could only get men from the great cities to go upon lands that are now ready for the hand of the farmer. we would greatly increase the products. and thus possibly relieve the people from the high cost of living. I do not know how it can be done. I have sometimes thought we might have a provision in our immigration laws that a certain definite proportion of the men who come to the United States should not stay in the great cities. but should be sent out into the farming regions of the great West. They raise and educate families in Europe on 10 acres of land by the system of intensive farming. In this country a man gets 160 acres in the West and immediately he reaches out to grab another 160 acres. and another 160 acres. and is rarely satisfied until he gets a whole section of 640 acres.
