Speech #630042049

Before he took the oath of office as Commissioner of Inmmigration ie informed the Secretary of Labor that he would have to ask for a leave of absence in order to attend the trial of his son. The Secretary of Labor. without any request from the elder Caminetti. suggested that he would undertake to have this case postponed because of the fact that the colnissioners services were greatly needed in his department. that the Department of Labor had just been created. and that it was necessary for him to renmain in Washington at that time on account of the peculiar conditions surrounding the office which he occupied. He then volunteered to request the Attorney General to postpone the trial of the cases for a few weeks until the Commissioner of Immigration could be spared from his official duties. This request was made. and the Attorney General. acceding to a natural and ordinary request from a fellow Cabinet member. directed the district attorney to continue the cases until fall. explaining the reason therefor. This is one of the reasons given by the district attorney.
