Session #63 · 1913–15

Speech #630008399

If I have made any objectionable remarks. I might withdraw them. but I am getting tired of this argument about protecting labor when labor has always had to fight its own battles. and probably will have to in the future. What labor wants is to have their legal and constitutional rights protected and a fair opportunity and a square deal. they do not need any tariff laws to protect them at all. I want to have read here as a part of my remarks. in my own time. a statement made before President Taft by the secretary of the Federation of Labor urging the signing of the immigration bill. I desire to have part of that read to show the position he takes. that a protective tariff. while it protects the manufacturer In collecting tribute in the way of abnormally high prices from the working people of this country. never has given the workingman any protection in the way of high wages.
