In 1909 the population of New York City was practically equal to that of the State of Ohio. and exceeded only by Pennsylvania. Illinois. and New York Itself. but the value of its manufactured products exceeded that reported by any State except Pennsylvania and New York. This predominance In manufactures is closely connected with the abundant supply of labor its large immigrant population being in particular an influential factor in causing manufacturing enterprises to locate there. New York City is the chief center of trade between the United States and Europe and also one of the principal distributing points for domestic trade. This commercial importance has also contributed greatly to the high rank of the city in manufacturing industries and to making New York the financial center of the United States. thereby rendering it easy to obtain capital for the e6tablishment and extension of such industries Measured by the increase In value of manufactured products. the industrial development of New York City from 1904 to 1909 was reater than from 1899 to 1904. tie increase being $503 169 570. or 3 per cent. for the period 19041909. and $353.652.745. or 0.2e cent. for the period 18991904.
