Session #62 · 1911–13

Speech #620314649

I have always voted to sustain his vetoes in this House. but I can not follow him on this measure. I wish for him success and happiness in his retirement to private life. but I believe it to be my patriotic duty to vote to override his veto in the interest of the American laborer and in the interest of all the American people. The platform upon which the President was a candidate for reelection carried this plank: We pledge the Republican Party to the enactment of appropriate laws to give relief from the constantly growing evil of induced or undesirable immigration which Is inimical to the progress and welfare of the people of the United States. I indorsed that plank in our platform. gave the President my support. and I am acting In absolute good faith in casting my vote to override his veto. The Republican Party has always stood for the protection of the American wage earner and the American workshop. and it certainly should stand for the protection of the American wage earner from the cheap foreign labor that is flooding the American labor market under the present immigration laws. Every man on this side opposing this measure in the speeches just made stood for and advocated the reelection of President Taft. Our platform was adopted at Chicago by an overwhelming vote of the delegates assembled from every State and congressional district in the United States.
