Session #62 · 1911–13

Speech #620267133

They say I am not a friend to the foreign element. Mr. Chairman. in the light and wisdom of history I believe I am a better friend to the 10.000.000 foreign born who inhabit this Republic than those gentlemen who would add another 10.000.000 from the ignorant of foreign lands. This asylun for the oppressed is full to overflowing. and I warn gentlemen that it is high time we were taking measures to protect the ones we have already admitted. My friend. the gentleman from New York . says. in effect. that because I represent a district that has but a small foreign element I know nothing about the immigration question. If that is good reasoning. Mr. Chairman. the gentleman himself would be but a poor judge of Americanism. for lie comes from a district where almost the entire population is foreign born. For myself. I believe that this great old ship of state is already heavily loaded with the freight of ignorance.
