I made that suggestion and asked a member of the Committee on Immigration to study that point. The gentleman is here now. I do not know whether he gave it his attention or not. As far as I am concerned I am not prepared to say. I desire to call attention to this one other point made by the people upon the Pacific coast about paying wages in every port touched. In a vessel running from Seattle to Alaska. the vessel would stop at Ketchikan. and there the seamen would be entitled to onehalf of their wages. It would then go on to Skagway. and there they could demand half of what was left. and so from port to port so that very little would be left when it arrived at its final destination.
