Session #62 · 1911–13

Speech #620207191

I bring the question of immigration to the notice of the gentleman. with a view to calling his attention to the fact that there is a wide difference of opinion in labor circles whether there should or should not be a continuation of immigration to this country. Certain labor leaders are very much opposed to immigration and are greatly in favor of restriction. Now. then. if immigration. which was provided for in the Constitution of the United States and which has given substantial basis to the prosperity of the country. is to be put in the hands of those who are diametrically opposed to it. It raises the question whether immigration should be relegated to a department of this kind.
