Mr. Chairman. this bill introduced by me provides for the creation of a department of labor. with a secretary of labor. who shall be a member of the Presidents Cabinet. three assistant secretaries. a solicitor of the Department of Justice for the department of labor. a chief clerk. a disbursing clerk. and such other clerks. inspectors. and special agents as may be provided for by Congress. It transfers the Commissioner Goneral of Immigration. the commissioners of imnmigratiou. the Bureau of Immigration. the Immigration Service at large. the Bureau of Labor. and the Commissioner of Labor from the epartment of Commerce to the new department of labor. It changes the title of the Bureau of Labor to the bureau of labor statistics .and the Commissioner of Labor to the commissioner of labor statistics. and transfers the duties of the Commissioner of Labor to the commissioner of labor statistics. including those imposed by the Erdman Act. It further authorizes the collection and publication of statistics relative to the condition of labor and the products and distribution of the products of the same. and directs the secretary of labor to call upon other departments of the Government for such statistical data as they may have which would be valuable for that purpose.
