Session #62 · 1911–13

Speech #620177975

In South America large numbers of settlers from foreign countries are taking up great areas of the rich agricultural and grazing land. I understand that in Brazil alone German colonizing concerns have taken up 8.000 square miles of land. The States of Santa Catharina and Rio Grande de Sul are largely controlled by German companies. The nations are reaching out for the trade of South America. They are sending their immigrants and their settlers there. and these create a market for the products of the mother country. No one can tell what complications may arise as the result of this colonization. We have nothing but the tacit consent of European countries to our maintenance of the Monroe doctrine.
