Session #62 · 1911–13

Speech #620137516

He was born in a foreign country and lived in the Territory of Nebraska when that State was admitted into the Union. and the Supreme Court held that the admission of the State into the Union naturalized him by act of Congress. because the people were admitted. as a State on an equal footing with the other States of the Union. Now it seems to me that there is a complete analogy between admitting that State into the Union and the admission of Texas. and that there is no more reason why an inhabitant of Texas at the time it became a State should not be a citizen than the inhabitants of another State or another Territory that claimed naturalization by the admission of the State into the Union. I do not see any difference.
