Mr. President. coming back to the suggestion I was making in regard to the condition of the recent immigration from southeastern Europe. the commission find that the market is overcrowded with common labor at the seats of many of our basic industries. and they base that conclusion very largely upon a comparison of the weekly wage of the laborer and his yearly receipts. By such comparisons it appears that in the iron and steel industry the weekly wage of those investigated was $14.35. while the average amount received for the whiole year was only $346. indicating that they were employed less than half the time. So going through the different industriesthat is an extreme casewe found that in the bituminous coalmining industry and. in the silkmanufacturing industry. and in the woolen and worsted industries those with whom we came in contact seemed to have employment less than twothirds of the time.
