Session #62 · 1911–13

Speech #620008346

If the gentleman would study the facts more and theorize less. he would understand how that occurs. In a circular which I have here it is stated that there are seven bagging factories in North Carolina. three in South Carolina. three in Virginia. and three in Georgia. and our attention is called to the fact that In India. where jute. which is the principal product of which this material is made and manufactured. is grown. the manufacturers pay an average of 50 cents a week to their laborers. But of course the fact that American labor is to be brought into competition with Asiatic labor living and dying under conditions degraded. hopeless. and comfortless almost beyond belief will cause no pause in the program of the gentleien on the other side. It is unfortunate that those people should live under the condition they do. but we must not reduce our people to their level. What we do will be in the direction of raising them to ours.
