Pou and his party declare that these people are coming to America to be robbed by the Republican protective tariff and the Republican trusts and to have their liberties abridged and crushed. But still they come. for they are yearning for such robbery and oppression of which the Republican party has been guilty. In this connection. it should be noted that the Democratic party has never favored the Republican policies of restricting immigration. but has always been in favor of letting down the bars to all. desirable and undesirable. As I have already shown. one of the achievements of this administration is a law putting up still higher the bars against undesirable immigration. On the other hand. are there any American citizens with their eyes fixed longingly upon any of the countries of the Old World. where labor is better paid. and where there is ahigher standard of comfort for each individual and a higher plane of citizenship than here? Not a single one.
