I do not suppose there is any Government on the face of the earth that deals more In figures and has more departments to make figures for Congress and the people than we have. Notwithstanding that fact. we come here and pass bills and resolutions employing hundreds of additional employees and establishing other departments when the work ought to be done by the present employees. I do not hesitate to tell the Senate that in my judgment twothirds of the work that was done by the honorable committee appointed to look after the subject of immigration. which cost the American people $500.000 or more. ought to have been done by the Department of Commerce and Labor. I do not hesitate to say that the facts and figures we are seeking. the information that we can hope to obtain that is reliable. ought to be furnished by the department on a resolution adopted by the Senate.
