I was saying. Mr. Chairman. that the gentleman tried to convey the idea that while the Immigration Commission was abroad It was so engrossed with its labors investigating immigration conditions in foreign countries for the purpose of bettering immigration conditions in this country that it did not have time to have any fun at all. The gentleman from New York practically said that he did not have time to look upon the great St. Peters. and did not have time to say anything or see anything in Paris. but. Mr. Chairman. let us see whether they had time. or any member of the commission had time. to see anything anywhere else or to take part in any sort of amusements or pleasures or entertainment while abroad. I noticed in an article in one of the papers of the city of New York. published on the 7th day of September. 1907. that among other things said about the Immigration Commissions trip abroad. the following language was employed. which has not been denied up to this time that I have heard of. as much given to denying facts as the gentleman from New York seems to be: Representative WILLIAM S. BENNET. of New York. and Mrs. Bennet. who returned from Europe yesterday by White Star steamer Cedric. had some interesting experiences while abroad. Mr. RENNET was a member of a committee that investigated immigration conditions in Europe and Asia Minor. While In Turkey a call was made upon the SultanYou all remember that old Sultan . whose public life was so corrupt and whose private life was so dissolute that he was driven from the throne.
