Session #61 · 1909–11

Speech #610092630

President. that from what I have seen in the way of newspaper criticism and criticism elsewhere. I was not prepared for the statement which the Senator has made. and I recognize that not only in what has been done in the accumulation of information and in ithe -reports made upon the subjects already concluded. but in the part which is now in process of conclusion. there is a great deal of the utmost importance to the people of this country. There is a very widespread feeling in my part of the couitry that immigration .has not been sufficiently guarded. .and I think it is of the utmost importance that the information such as is indicated by the Senator from Vermont should be given to the .people. in order that they may know what has been done and what is the effect of it. in order that they may the more properly determine what .shall be done in the -future. While I know nothing about whether the expenditure has been properly made or not. -of course I can not .do otherwise than rely upon the judgment and good faith of those who have had in charge this work. For myself I think the work ought to be completed.
