Session #61 · 1909–11

Speech #610077475

I know that the settlers out there have felt that the Government ought not to be too strict in requiring them to comply with technicalities in the honest acquisition and occupation of those lands. But Alaska presents a different situation. Alaska will never be settled to any great extent by American immigrants. Alaska is our great storehouse of treasure for the future. It holds in gold and timber and coal and other precious resources something that the United States can look upon as the source of its future supply. and to permit these companies to exploit it and to obtain for a mere song these vast treasures is. in my opinion. an outrage.
