Speech #600143908

Mr. Chairman. while the gentleman from California was discussing this subject the query came to my mind as to vhether or not the people of the Pacific coast were not very largely responsible for this increase in the number of Chinese immigrants in the United States. It i s now more than twestyfive years since the exclusion act was passed. At that time it is claimed that there were something less than 100.000 Chinamen in the United States. They were nearly all of them adults. probably the great majority of them were past middle agel. there were no childerntre w e few women. and there were very few youths.
