Session #60 · 1907–09

Speech #600138021

So today many of us find it difficult to realize that the absence from among us of Senator LATIMER is anything more than one of those temporary separations of friends so common among those who are in public life. My acquaintance and friendship with Senator LATIMER were brief. I knew him casually as a pleasant. active. friendly Member of the Senate until in the closing days of the Fiftyninth Congress we were both appointedhe by the President of the Senate. I by the Speaker of this Houseas members of the Immigration Commission. The duties of that commission naturally threw us into close connection. I learned not only to regard him with respect. but with esteem and affection.
