Session #60 · 1907–09

Speech #600128552

Mr. Speaker. it seems from the statement of the gentleman from New York that the clerks in the state courts of New York are not sufficiently patriotic to do the work of naturalization when people call upon them for that purpose. The state courts of Illinois are always ready to naturalize any citizen who applies and is entitled to naturalization. They are glad to do the work and they will keep the courts open all night for that purpose if it be necessary. The increase from $5 to $10 proposed to be made under this bill is unjust. unfair. and excessive. and the bill ought not under any circumstances to be enacted into law.
