Session #60 · 1907–09

Speech #600087948

It is these things that make the Congress of the United States refuse to enact exclusion laws that are plainly for the benefit of the white inhabitants of this country and in the interest of Christian civilization. But. after all. Mr. Speaker. I may be mistaken in the impression I have heretofore had that the Pacific coast and its Representatives have race prejudices. They may not want Asiatics excluded. And I congratulate them upon this broadened catholicity of spirit. I congratulate them on the fact that they now seem ready to join hands with New England and welcome to the "land of the free and the home of the brave" people in any number and from all parts of the world.
