Session #60 · 1907–09

Speech #600029326

The newspapers of that section did. however. publish some things about some remarks which I made which were inaccurate. I do not think they were intentionally inaccurate. but they quoted me as expressing an opinion in regard to peonage. something which I said in my remarks I knew absolutely nothing about. and also as expressing an opinion in relation to a lady who was an assistant United States district attorney. a lady whom I know and whom I respect. I expressed no opinion whatever. and if this investigation is asked at the hands of the Immigration Committee I want to say frankly and fairly to both sides of this House that so far as I am concerned as a member I intend that the investigation shall be fair. accurate. and so far as I can make it conclusive. no matter what we may find.
