Session #60 · 1907–09

Speech #600013660

I have none. On the contrary. I quite agree that the Government should establish at the proper ports suitable houses for the reception and examination of immigrants. My purpose in calling attention to it was twofold. I had a little curiosity to know whether there had been changes of views by certain Senators in regard to the matter of immigration. Then. forgetting for the moment that we had already provided for Charleston. and recollecting the fact that there had been a matter of legislation which seemed to me to be directed quite particularly at that port. I felt an interest to know whether we might not at this time provide for Charleston.
