As I understand the object of this measure. it is simply to give improved conditions at Philadelphia. so that a more thorough examination can be nmade of immigrants as they arrive in this country. The boarding house. as I un- . derstand it. where the immigrants are taken after they are landed from the- vessel is now some distance from the )lace of landing. Upon investigating the immigrant question in Europe. we found that the steamship companies are at a great disadvantage where the boarding houses are in one part of the city and the immigrant station in another. for the reason that the immigrants will be scattered over the city and there will be no opportunity to take care of them and exercise influence over them..and they can not be made as cleanly in their clothing and in the care of their quarters as is the case where magnificent immigration stations are provided. such as are found in many places. - I understand that the station at Philadelphia is an old building. over a hundred years old. and that it is not sufficient to take care of the immigrants when they are landed there. I do not see that that has a thing to do with the question as to whether a man nay be for or against the class of immigrants coming into the United States. The object is simply to take care of the people who are coming here under the laws that wo have already passed. If we want to further restrict immigration so as to prevent the coming of a class of immigrants to which we are opposed. it is all right to put it into a bill. but I think this measure ought to pass. so as to give accomnodation for the people who are noW coming under the laws we have already passed.
