My suggestion was instigated. I may say. somewhat l)3 my interest in th e port.of Charleston. a port which has manifested some considerable. enterprise in the introduction of a desirable class of immigrants. and there was some legislation last year that I thought was decidedly_ unfriendly to it. As the attitude of the learned Senator from Massachusetts seems to be somewhat changed in regard to the question. I did not know but. that while he was in a liberal mood in this matter lie might recall the fact that pbssibly.the action taken last year hald shut up the port of Charleston to this desirable class of imanmigrants. and that possibly he might now add to this bill a provision for an immigrant station at Charleston. only for the most desirable class. I will say. None of us desire the undesirable class. "
