Session #60 · 1907–09

Speech #600006426

The population of Chicago is greater than that of either the State of Iowa or Alabama. and in view of this fact I should like to ask the gentleman from Iowa and the gentleman from Alabama a few questions. I should like to inquire of the gentleman from Iowa if he is aware of the fact that the population of his State has been decreasing for several years? I wonder If the gentleman from Iowa would consider it impertinent of me to ask if there is a possibility of relation between the decrease of population in his State and his annual speeches in Congress against immigration? Also. I might suggest to the gentleman from Iowa that he would learn. should he care to consult the census reports. that over onehalf of what is left of his States population is composed of foreignborn and foreignparentage population.
