Session #60 · 1907–09

Speech #600006421

The South is today both prosperous and progressive. and its enterprisingcitizens have aided in its magnificent development. and in their veins flows the best and purest strain of AngloSaxon blood. We have one race problem. which has been for more than forty years a great burden to the South. I believe it is the sentiment of our people that. while we would like to have immigration for the development of the Souths great resources. we do not careto have imposed upon us any possibility of dealing with another race problem. In discussing restricted immigration we are not advocating the exclusion of all immigrants from the United States. Many of the immigrants who came into this country in its early history in later years have made good citizens and unifed with us to develop the country and have been devoted to our free institutions. We are not talking in this debate of a class of immigrants who come in from countries Irke. England. Ireland.
