Session #60 · 1907–09

Speech #600006363

The stability of our Governent must rest in the hearts and the minds of the people. And if it is to be stable. permanent. secure. its people must be comfortable in their homes. and that comfort depends upon the labor market. It depends upon the wage that may be paid. and every thousand immigrants that come hereevery million. as they cane last yearnakes more and more terrible the possibilities of successfully answering this question. I do not base my opposition to unrestricted himilgration alone because very many of them are undesirable citizens. but I base it largely upon this broader question. upon this more important one. that ought to address itself even to the gentleman from Missouri. who upon all occasions when the immigration question is broached waxes eloquent in defense of allowing all people to come here to increase our vexation in the solving of this great problem.
