Speech #590164725

Mr. Speaker. I believe in the restriction of immigration coming into this country. I am opposed to the Asiatic innigration colillg in here. I fill opposed to the Eurcpetal imnigration comling into this country that is not hontogeneous with our hone people and that we call not assimilate. I do not believe that you call accomplish this result by any .ma shifts. I believe that to attempt to do so is only telnporizing. and no result wvill be accomnplished. I believe there are ltt two ways iii which *this question c:tn he reached and entirely solved. and that is to pass a1 prohibitive law against the Asiatic coolies coning into this country at all. alnd so far as the Eurolieall nations are concerned I believe that tile wvise position to take with reference to this matter is to adopt an educational test that will largely eliminate tile races from Mediterranean Europe. and will not interfere to any material extent with the races of northern Europe coming it hereraces of whon ve call make good citizens. Now. that Was the proposition that cante before this House. That w.s the propositio that the Senate of the United States presented to tile country. anid that was the proposition tha t the Comtmittee oil Immigration of Ithis House presented to the House. That is the only question that the people of the United States want any legislation inl reference to. The people who believe in restriction in this coultry. tile people who believe in maintaining a hologeneous race of people. the people who believe in protecting the labor at home from the pauper labor of Europe. do not believe in and do.not want the makeshifts written in this bill. They want t straightout. honest. fair declaration and fair restrictions of immigration. and they do not get it in this bill. You can say what you please about the important administrative conditions in. this bill.. Ilat is a ntere drop in a bucket of water.
