Session #59 · 1905–07

Speech #590163408

I am heartily in favor of the resolution of my friend from Massachusetts. I want light thrown on this situation. I am glad to see the gentleman from Massachusetts indict the present Administration. on the question of the restriction of immigration. I have been in favor of restricting immigration for manny years. for protecting the American standard. for protecting the American workman. and it is only a few years lgo that the President of the United States sent in a message here in favor of restricting Immigration. Those who are informed well know that. although openly the President of the United States favored the restriction of iminigration. when the crucial time came in the contest. when the Presidents hnd was needed to lid in passing a bill through this House. adopting an educational test and fairly restricting immigration coming into this country. and to protect the Americait workmen from the slum labor of Europe. the Presidents hands did not come to the relief of those who wanted that kind of a bill. And today we are about to go to the country with a bill. an Administration bill. not a restriction bill. with the aid and assistance of the President of the United States.
