Speech #590163136

I have been aware for a year or more that this company. tie Colorado Fuel and Iron Company. a largo steel manufacturing company in Colorado. has been engaged in replacing a large untlnher of its white workingmen with Japanese. I suppose they do so because they find it profitable. It may be both inl the quality of the labor and the wages paid : although I understand that iup to this titue no discrimination between the Caucasian and the Asiatic has been made by this company ill the compeisation paid for labor. But it shows that this Mongolian invasion. which commenced nearly half a century ago ott the Iacific coast. and which was stopped and turned back. has commenced again from another country. and that Colorado. like all the other mountain States where labor is heavily employed. has already Commenced seriously to feel the effect of this invasion. I recall that in going from Deniver to Grand Lake a year ago I crossed a spit- railroad then being constructed upon which a large number of Japanese were working in the grading outfit. I was told that there was one group iu the neighborhood of 1I0 strong.
