Session #59 · 1905–07

Speech #590161912

President. as I was saying. the question has been raised here and it has been put in such a shape that we are asked to reject this report on the plain ground that it is believed to strengthen the contractlabor laws. I do not know how it may be with other Senators representing great industrial Statesand there are many of them herebut I can not myself assent. after the issue has been raised. to doing anything which will modify those great defensive laws. They do not involve the question of immigration .in the least. It is the question of labor and whether labor can be brought in under a contract. direct or indirect. in the form of paid pasages or in any other form. I dislike very much to have such a question raised. raised as I think needlessly. about this bill.
