The salaries of the chiefs of bureaus in the Department of Commerce and LaborCorporations. Labor. Standards. Coast Survey. Fisheries. Immigrationare all $5.000. The Census is larger. The committee in this matter were actuated merely by what they believed to be right and due to the officers and the public service. It was not to be supposed that an amnendment affecting this oflicer whose salary is now under consideration. taking up new duties. affecting western interests. would be adopted without friction.
