Session #59 · 1905–07

Speech #590138036

When you search for the motive you are compelled to agree that the whole scheme is one to bring the sugar plantations owned by New York and English capitalists within the tariff wall of the United States Government. so that they can sell their sugar in our markets without paying the tariff duty. That is only one phase and a very small phase of the race question. On the Pacific coast the relationship between the Mongolians and the Caucasians is involved. The President announces himself as favoring the policy of absolute obliteration of the race line. the granting of full citizenship to the Japanese. The Americans of the Pacific coast. as I understand it. are bitterly opposed to this policy. and without regard to party lines.
