Speech #590134157

And now we are confronted with a condition here which will reverse or tend to reverse all this. The American laborer can not compete with the Chinese or Japanese cooly and it is not right to ask him to try to do so. I will not speak of the habits of these coolies. their morals or their social life or of its influence. except to say that experience has taught us that outside tile question of wage competition and beyond it there are objections to their presence aliong usobjections that are unanswerable. And let not the skilled laborer delude himself that lie will be exempt from tile evil results which will follow the coming of these Japanese laborers. He will not escape here no nmore than he has in Hawaii.
