Session #59 · 1905–07

Speech #590131657

I think that. in view of the fact that this is a bill to correct oversights of the court rather than of the applicant. there ought not to be any hesitation whatever in passing this law and protecting those who have acquired property and shown themselves to be honest and industrious citizens. The Republic has not been populated wholly by nativeborn American citizens. Many citizens who have contributed to its greatness and glory were foreign born and have sought citizenship here in the way provided by law through the courts. They have not the responsibility in the methods pursued in naturalization. but the responsibility is upon the courts. and where the courts err the applicant. the man made a citizen. ought not to be held responsible for the error and oversight of the .courts and made to suffer. I sincerely hope that the bill may pass. 190C. DECEMBrER 17.
