Therefore to restrict them to eight hours a day is a hardship instead of a benefit. Mr. President. I think that the whole situation can be met by abolishing the eighthour law so far as it applies to alien labor. and by allowing the authorities there not to force a man to work more than eight hours. but to permit him. where he wishes to work longer. to do so. receiving the same hourly rate for the additional time. Now I will come back to this practical difficulty mentioned by Mr. Stevens. and I think when the facts are before the Senate it will be seen that there is very much in Mr.
