Before the gentleman sits down. I would like to ask him whether the statement which I have frequently read in the newspapers. that the South wants immigration. is correct or not. and whether he does not believe that the large anount of prosperity which has been enjoyed in the Northern and Western States from the time of the war on has been largely due to tile immigration to those uncleared territories. and would he kindly explain. if the South does not want immnigration. what it does want to supplant the negro labor which we have heard so often spoken of by gentlemen from that section?
