Speech #590004521

He believes that lie has got a right to a good home for himself and his family. to such wages as will enable him to properly clothe his children and give them good schooling. and have separate rooms for his boys and his girls. and he ought to live up to that standard. The man who denies that proposition is unworthy of his American birth. But. on the other hand. the class of immigrants that are coming in here to compete with the American laborer is a class of people who for hundreds of years have been downtrodden and oppressed in their own homes in the old country. They are peopie many of whom live today in America in one room in the tenements of the big cities and are satisfied with their condition. They are people many of whom I am informed do not wish their children to go to school.
