Speech #590004500

It is that reason which makes us the great race that we have always beenloyal to ourselves and loyal to our people. It is because we have refused to mix our blood with the blood of an inferior people that we today stand at the head of the worlds civilization. If the immigration coming into this country is a menace to American citizens. to American people. is it not our duty to stop it now? I want to call your attention to a few sentences that the President uses in his message in reference to this question that goes right to the meat of the question. He says: What we should desire to find out is the individual quality of the individual man. in my judgment. with this end in view. we shall have to prepare through our own agents a far more rigid inspection in the countries from which the immigrants come. It will be a great deal better to have fewer immigrants. but all of the right kind. than a great number of immigrants. many of whom are necessarily of the wrong kind. As far as possible we wish to limit the immigration to this country to persons who propose to become citizens of this country. and we can well afford to insist upon adequate scrutiny of the character of those who are thus proposed for future cItizenship. Now. are we doing it? Are we scrutinizing those who- propose to come here for future citizenship? I find that the report of the CommissionerGeneral of Immigration for this yearthat is. for the fiscal year ending June 30. 1905shows that of the 1.026.000 immigrants that came into this country only 221.000 were of Teutonic origin. 124.000 of Celtic origin. and the balance were either Slavic. Iberic. or Mongolian origin. people of a different blood from ours and a different race. You say that may not affect us. that we are able to absorb these people and have them become a part of us. If 1.000.000 comes this yearand It has been gradually increasing from year to yearin ten years it will amount to 10.000.000 immigrants. twothirds of whon are people of a race different from ours and inferior to ours. We must absorb them. A million a year in ten years will amount to more than onetenth of the population of the United States.
