The people and the Government of Mexico were Catholic in religion. The majority of the Americans. particularly the class from which such colonists could be drawn. were Protestants. Texas was a province of the Kingdom of Spain. while the American immigrants were Republicans after the maner of Jefferson. In fact. every condition save the fertility of the soil and the beauty of the climate was calculated to repel emigration from the States of the American Union. Gradually the French and Spanish titles in North America had been relinquished to the irresistible AngloAmerican. The transfer of Louisiana and of the Floridas were significant facts of recent history which did not allay the jealous apprehension of the Mexican authorities.
