The only evil to be corrected now. as I understand. arises out of the fact that China has given notice that she will abrogate our existing treaty with her. She has a right to do that. The suggestion has been made that if that is done. it will leave our existing laws on the subject of Chinese immigration in an uncertain state. I. myself. believe that existing laws would still be in force. but there ought not to be a doubt as to that. and we should correct the danger of any such evil. I understand that the amendment proposed by the Senator from Colorado presented here some days ago and the amendment suggested by the Senator from Illinois will accomplish that object.
