There is an immigration coming into the South. but it is coming mainly from the Middle West and the Northwestern States. In Louisiana there has been some immigration of Italians. mainly from middle Italy. They have made certain parts of Louisiana in the sugar belt bloom like a rose garden. cultivating the very ditches and banks. and getting much more out of the land for everybody. as well as for themselves. than the incompetent negro population has ever been able to do. We do not apprehend very much from the European immigration generally. We expect that other immigration agents from other sections frighten them off with statements about the negro population. But we are getting a magnificent class of men from Iowa. Michigan.
